Hey so here is a re-do of a project that I did a few years back that I would really like to incorporate in my portfolio. It is a tourism ad for London to be placed on busses, train stations and on any large format advertising outlets. They are all vectors relating to London than the london skyline in the background. I wanted to keep it simple yet effective so I would love some feedback on what is working/what may not be working. Thank You.

Really like all the illustrations, but on the O's in London they're a little light in color on the right side. When I read it they look like C's, seems if you changed the bridges to red it would stand out a little more and read as O's.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tristan, maybe making the bridge red or adding another element by the lower half of the bridge would fill in the O a bit... I don't think anything needs to be added. It's simple yet very detailed so I think you hit that right on... maybe spread out the information that you've placed in the right corner? Give yourself a little room to make the type bigger and take up more room, I don't think it necessarily needs to be all in the corner :)
ReplyDeleteI truly agree with Tristan & Amanda the O is lacking some colors, from far away it looks like a C. Also london it look cut off on the letter D maybe you could take out the image behind it and try to fit it in that space. Other than this minor changes i truly love this expressive typography you really capture London
ReplyDeleteI see a lot of work here that has made some excellent elements individually. Hmmm... actually, now I'm wondering if this is your artwork, or if you used some of the vector art available through Google and/or Thinkstock?
ReplyDeleteQuestion: how much of this is your artwork, and how much is existing artwork done by others? For this to be in your portfolio - I would suggest that it be all your own artwork, because you will be asked. And a quick google search has just pulled up some vector artwork that looks almost identical to this.
Meanwhile, my suggestion for the composition is to separate the background and foreground, and not allow them to overlap. That is where the problems start to happen, in my opinion, because the shapes in the background interfere with the little shapes that make up the letters. Do they need to overlap? How might you resize or reposition the foreground? How might you resize the background? If this becomes smaller, what other London skyline buildings can you add to fill out the horizontal space?
I think you could have a very simple "fix" by just reducing the words and the background shapes so there is no overlap.
Yes they are vectors pulled from Thinkstock, since I am not an illustrator I figured it would be okay to pull elements together in one designed piece to create a new look and feel. I have been wanting to do a poster like this for quite sometime but perhaps I will rethink using the vectors. I really enjoy the colors and the skyline in the background, do you think just using solid type for "Discover London" will have enough interest, in that case I feel it would have to be in an ad series rather than alone?
